The #potavristou campaign will be running again this year following its massive success over the last 2 years. Every group or individual can reach out wherever they are, pick up the litter found around them and upload their data using the free Clean Swell app (download from Play Store/App store) or send it through one of AKTI’s social media pages. They can also upload the photos on their own social media pages using the hashtag #potavristou. More information is available in the Instructions to get involved with #potavristou section.

We are reaching out for all the month of September! With the peak of our campaign running from the 22^nd to the 25^th of September.

Campaign background

The #potavristou campaign was first implemented in September 2019. “Potavristou” is a word used in the Cypriot dialect which roughly translates to “reach out” or “lend a hand”. It was used to name this innovative action that was started by a group of volunteers in collaboration with AKTI Project and Research Centre. Of note is how #potavristou became a “prophetic” action. It was developed in 2019 during a time where there were no restrictions on gatherings. However, a year later, during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, this was a different story. An action such as #potavristou was well-received as it allowed people to be active and help the environment without endangering themselves or others!

In 2020 an international competition was organised by Ocean Conservancy, a multinational organisation, to promote the 10 most innovative beach clean-up actions of 2019. AKTI’s submission involved three actions: #potavristou, the DecyDe-4 decision toolbox for marine litter reduction, and our brand surveys. Among the hundreds of entries from more than 130 different countries, AKTI’s collective submission was awarded as one of the 10 most innovative actions worldwide!

Results from the previous #potavristou campaigns

On the 21^st of September 2019 on International Coastal Cleanup Day, the organisers encouraged the audience to help clean our seas and coasts, wherever they may be. On this day, more than 500 people reached out and collected surrounding litter. This included items such as glass and plastic cups, bottles, bags, food containers, drinks cans, nets, etc. 5.5 tonnes of waste were collected that day and removed before they could begin their vicious cycle of entering the sea and coming back into our lives in the form of microplastics.

After the incredibly positive response that this campaign received in 2019, #potavristou was run again in 2020 during the whole month of September. The results from the #potavristou_2020 campaign were astonishing: 2016 volunteers took part, data was sent for 187 different locations in Cyprus and 20 locations abroad, 12 tonnes of litter were collected (70% of which was plastic), additionally there was a reach of 12 million through the media and AKTI’s social media pages!

Instructions to get involved with #potavristou

1. You can take part as an individual, with your group or through an organised event.
2. Wherever you may be, either at the beach or on a boat, reach out and pick up any litter in sight! You can also go a bit further and perform a thorough beach clean-up!
3. Separate the litter into groups and count the individual items e.g., this many plastic bottles, this many cigarette butts etc.
4. Take a photo
5. Upload this photo to Facebook/Twitter/Instagram with the hashtags #potavristou, #teamocean and #akti, along with the relevant data (number, type), collection location and how many people were involved.
6. You can also use the free Clean Swell app (download from Play Store/App store) developed by the Ocean Conservancy.
7. In the case of you owning a private Instagram account, please upload to Facebook as we will not be able to see your post. In your Facebook post tag ΑΚΤΗ / AKTI Project and Research Alternatively, you can send it through AKTI’s webpage or just send it through our Facebook Messenger! Doing this helps us here at AKTI as it allows us to record field data that can be used to compare results both from the past and in the future.
8. What will you do with the litter you have collected?

• If you are at a remote beach, take it with you!
• If you are at an organised beach, put it in the available rubbish bins (there should also be some PMD bins around)
• If you are on a boat, dispose of it in the corresponding bins when you make port.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting increase in plastic pollution, the need for a greater number of participants is critical!

Therefore, be a part of #potavristou and reach out wherever you may be, to help clean our seas and coasts!

Ογδόντα οκτώ κιλά σκουπίδια ανασύρθηκαν από το βυθό των Δημοτικών Μπάνιων σε εκδήλωση που διοργανώθηκε στις 10 Ιουλίου στα Δημοτικά Μπάνια από διάφορους φορείς της Πάφου σε διάστημα σαράντα λεπτών και από δώδεκα δύτες.

Συγκεκριμένα, την αγάπη τους για ένα καθαρό φυσικό περιβάλλον έστειλαν το Σάββατο οι χειμερινοί κολυμβητές του Σωματείου Βρυσούθκια Πάφου, σε συνεργασία με τον Δήμο Πάφου, τον Παφιακό Σύλλογο Υποβρυχίου Κυνηγίου, το Καταδυτικό Κέντρο CYDIVE, του Φώτου Σωκράτους και το Κέντρο Μελετών και Έρευνας Ακτής, στην εκδήλωση που διοργάνωσαν καθαρίζοντας το βυθό των Δημοτικών Μπάνιων.

Σε δηλώσεις του ο πρόεδρος του Σωματείου των χειμερινών κολυμβητών Πάφου Ματθαίος Ιεροκηπιώτης ανέφερε πως μέσα στα πλαίσια της ευαισθητοποίησης για τη δημιουργία
περιβαλλοντικής συνείδησης αποφάσισαν όπως προχωρήσουν στον καθαρισμό του βυθού των Δημοτικών Μπάνιων. Όπως επεσήμανε, οι χειμερινοί κολυμβητές είναι ιδιαίτερα ευαισθητοποιημένοι σε θέματα καθαριότητας ειδικά των πανέμορφων ακτών της Κύπρου.

Μέσα σε αυτά τα πλαίσια συμπλήρωσε, «θέλουμε να στείλουμε ένα δυνατό μήνυμα ότι το πανέμορφο φυσικό περιβάλλον που μας προσφέρει ο τόπος μας πρέπει να το προφυλάξουμε και να το διατηρούμε καθαρό, ώστε να μπορούμε να το απολαμβάνουμε τόσο εμείς όσο και οι χιλιάδες ξένοι τουρίστες, που μας επισκέπτονται κάθε χρόνο».

Από την πλευρά της, η Άννα Τσέλεπου εκ μέρους του Κέντρου Μελετών και Έρευνας ΑΚΤΗ ανέφερε πως στο πλαίσιο της εκδήλωσης καθαρισμού του βυθού των Δημοτικών Μπάνιων μέσα σε σαράντα λεπτά και από δώδεκα δύτες ανασύρθηκαν από τον βυθό ογδόντα οκτώ κιλά σκουπίδια.

Οι διοργανωτές της εκδήλωσης, είπε, έστειλαν το μήνυμα ότι το θαλάσσιο περιβάλλον είναι μέρος της καθημερινότητάς μας και συνδέεται άμεσα με την υγεία μας.

“Το Finish σε συνεργασία με το Κέντρο Μελετών και Έρευνας “ΑΚΤΗ” και τον Δήμο Στροβόλου, έθεσαν ως στόχο την προώθηση της εξοικονόμησης νερού στην Κύπρο και συγκεκριμένα στους κυπριακούς δήμους με πρόβλημα υδάτινων πόρων, ως μέτρο για την υδατική ασφάλεια και την προσαρμογή στην κλιματική αλλαγή. Το πρόγραμμα ξεκίνησε στις 17 Ιουνίου με αφετηρία τον Δήμο Στροβόλου, όπου 50 επιχειρήσεις που επλήγησαν από την πανδημία εξοπλίστηκαν με συσκευές εξοικονόμησης νερού. Ο στόχος είναι να εξοικονομηθούν έως και 1, 000, 000L νερού, σε χρονικό διάστημα ενός έτους, σηματοδοτώντας την αρχή μίας μεγάλης προσπάθειας για την προστασία του νερού στην Κύπρο, με ορίζοντα τουλάχιστον τριετίας.”

📊 The results from these workshops are the following:

ℹ️ In their opinion, the 3 main origins of marine litter are:

• Left on the beach by tourists/bathers that use the restaurants and bars 🏖

• Disposed of directly into the sea by the shipping, offshore, and port industries ⛴

• Transported to the sea by rivers 🏞️

ℹ️ In their opinion, the 3 most severe impacts caused by marine litter are:

• Killing fish and other marine organisms 🐠

• Threatening public health ⚕️

• Affecting the tourism and economy of the country 📉

ℹ️ The stakeholders also identified the most effective measures to address marine litter in Cyprus, which are the following:

• Cultivate environmental awareness in younger generations 👩‍🏫

• Apply littering fines as a deterrent 💵

• Enforce Deposit Return Scheme (DRS)

👉 The outputs from this workshop will be used to form a Policy Tool i.e. an Advocacy Tool for AKTI to present to high-level decision-makers.

📢 In a few days the final conference of the Youth Policy Project “𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝟒 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚” organized by Active Zone Outdoor will take place at Κέντρο Περιβαλλοντικής Ενημέρωσης Επισκοπής Πάφου on June 12, 2021 at 10:00. During the conference, the Policy Paper will be presented. In addition, young people and policy makers will be involved in thematic workshops about the sea. Late in the afternoon, participants will have the unique opportunity to get familiarized with dinghy sailing at Paphos Nautical Club.
