4๏ธโฃ specially designed workshops were carried out with great success under the “๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ณ๐๐ง-๐ฌ๐๐ข๐๐ง๐๐, ๐๐๐ฏ๐จ๐๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐๐จ-๐๐๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ก ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐ฒ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ” program supported by Ocean Conservancy, to gather the views of stakeholders on suitable, effective and applicable measures to address the marine litter issue. ๐๐ฏ

๐ The results from these workshops are the following:

โน๏ธ In their opinion, the 3 main origins of marine litter are:
โข Left on the beach by tourists/bathers that use the restaurants and bars ๐
โข Disposed of directly into the sea by the shipping, offshore, and port industries โด
โข Transported to the sea by rivers ๐๏ธ
.
โน๏ธ In their opinion, the 3 most severe impacts caused by marine litter are:
โข Killing fish and other marine organisms ๐
โข Threatening public health โ๏ธ
โข Affecting the tourism and economy of the country ๐
.
โน๏ธ The stakeholders also identified the most effective measures to address marine litter in Cyprus, which are the following:
โข Cultivate environmental awareness in younger generations ๐ฉโ๐ซ
โข Apply littering fines as a deterrent ๐ต
โข Enforce Deposit Return Scheme (DRS)
.
๐ The outputs from this workshop will be used to form a Policy Tool i.e. an Advocacy Tool for AKTI to present to high-level decision-makers.
